Art Therapy
Why Art Therapy?
Art Therapy and expression are productive tools for recovery. At Avalon Malibu, we use form of psychotherapy known as Art Therapy to encourage self-expression through painting, drawing, and modeling. Art is an effective tool in mental health and addiction treatments, because art helps to heal the connection of body, mind and spirit. The use of art as an expressive medium can help patients communicate, overcome stress, and explore different aspects of their unique and dynamic personalities.
Art Therapy integrates psychotherapeutic techniques and uses the creative process to improve mental health and well-being. Making art can improve and enhance the physical, psychological and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages and genders. Based on the belief that the creative process encourages self-expression, Art Therapy helps people resolve internal conflicts without verbal communication. Art Therapy also develops interpersonal skills, manages behavioral issues, reduces stress, and increases self-esteem and awareness.
Creative forms of therapy are used to treat a broad range of mental disorders and psychological distress. At Avalon Malibu, Art Therapy works in conjunction with other psychotherapy techniques such as group therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
What is Art Therapy at Avalon Malibu like?
Adults experiencing severe stress often struggle with verbally expressing their feelings. At Avalon Malibu, an art therapist may encourage patient expression with a variety of Art Therapy methods including drawing, painting, sculpture, and collage. Patients who have experienced emotional trauma, physical violence, domestic abuse, anxiety, depression, addiction, and other psychological issues can benefit from Art Therapy. With creative methods like Art Therapy, patients learn to develop communication, appreciate socialization, and engage with others.
In Avalon Malibu’s Art Therapy program, the goal is to improve the inner experience for the individual. This creative addiction treatment captures all feelings, perceptions, and imagination. While Art Therapy may involve art techniques or learning skills, the emphasis is first on developing and expressing images that come from inside. Clients do not need any art experience to participate, and Avalon Malibu therapists are not looking for perfect art projects.
The primary importance of Art Therapy at Avalon Malibu is to encourage expression of the patient’s inner world of images, feelings, thoughts, and ideas.
At Avalon Malibu, we combine 12-step approaches in addiction and substance abuse treatments with group and individual psychotherapy. While in residential treatment, clients are seen in individual therapy three times per week. Art Therapy is implemented to work intensively by examining factors contributing to distress and disabling these addiction influences to restore calm and wellness. We treat the dually diagnosed patient as well as those with psychiatric issues that include depression, anxiety, panic disorders, bipolar disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, personality disorders and Schizophrenia. Art Therapy is an important vehicle for successful self-actualization and healing
