A phobia, by definition, is an extreme and irrational fear or aversion to something. It is a type of anxiety disorder that is disabling and debilitating for most individuals. There is a host of specific phobias and many of them have specific names. Acrophobia is a fear of heights. Agoraphobia is a fear of public places, and claustrophobia is a fear of closed-in places. Social phobias affect people in everyday social situations. Other common phobias involve bleeding, tunnels, driving, water, flying and animals.
Some symptoms of phobias include:
Most individuals who have phobias also struggle with anxiety. Phobia symptoms can rocket into a full-scale anxiety attack. Because of the severity of the symptoms, people often begin to isolate themselves, leading to difficulty enjoying and participating in everyday life activities. It is essential in severe cases that an individual seek out medical care due to the constant concern with imagined illnesses or fear of looming death.

- Fear of death
Prevalence of Phobias
Phobias can be common. They affect over 10 percent of the United States population. They are the most common mental disorder, and women tend to suffer more with phobias than men do. In normal people, and with those who do not seek therapy, individuals are able to recognize their fear as irrational and consequently take measures to overcome the phobia. But in many other cases, people need help. Only about 10 percent of reported cases become permanent, lifelong phobias.
Avalon Malibu provides excellent treatment for individuals who suffer from phobias. The impact of this treatment depends on the person and the specific classification of phobia. We impart a holistic approach that utilizes meditation, exercise, nutrition, risk taking, writing therapy, yoga and much more to combat fears and instigate exposure treatments.
Avalon Malibu’s Phobia Treatment Center
Facing one’s fears, and understanding the root causes of phobias, is the first step to recovery and freedom. In Avalon Malibu’s group and one-on-one therapy treatments, clients are led through exercises that expose the object of the fear, to help overcome the fear.
There are different types of exposure therapy. One type of exposure treatment is flooding. Flooding pertains to the idea of a person meeting their fear object for an extended length of time, without the chance to flee. The goal of this therapy is to help the individual face the object of their fear and realize that the object itself will not harm them.
Counter-conditioning is another preferred treatment method often used in treating phobias. When counter-conditioning is used, the client is guided to implement a new response to the fear object. Instead of responding with a sense of panic in a situation, the client learns relaxation techniques that eventually replace anxiety and fear. Counter-conditioning is used most often with people who are unable to handle exposure treatments.
