Asking yourself questions is a great way to learn more about your individual journey and motivations. This becomes especially true when people are in recovery. In this blog, we’re going to go over some questions to ask yourself if you’re ready to explore your motivations and journey so far in recovery (this is a practice we often recommend at Avalon Malibu).Â
Before we get started, it’s important to note that everybody has a unique journey. What works for one person in recovery may not work for another, so it’s important to give yourself grace and make sure that you’re being patient with yourself. Everyone will answer the following questions differently, so don’t be afraid to give the following questions some thought and be honest with yourself while you’re answering.
Questions to Ask During Recovery
Below are some of the top questions that we recommend people ask when they’re in their treatment at Avalon Malibu. Okay, ready to get started? Grab a journal, find a quiet place to sit, and get ready to explore your inner thoughts and feelings.
Why Did You Initially Choose Recovery?
Examining your first motivations for choosing recovery can help you remember where you came from and motivate you during difficult moments.
What Things Help You Feel Motivated?
Remembering your motivations can be a powerful thing. Consider making a list of all the things that help you feel motivated so that you can refer back to those things during difficult moments.
Who Has Supported You the Most During Your Recovery?
Take a moment to recognize the people who have supported you and stood by you during your substance use recovery. Consider sending them a text or writing them a letter thanking them for everything they’ve done for you during your recovery.
What Do You Think Your Life Will Be Like in 5 Years? 10 Years?
By looking towards the future, you can gain some motivation in the present. What do you think your recovery (and your life) will look like in the coming years?
