What is Xanax?

Xanax is a widely used benzodiazepine that is often prescribed to individuals who have panic disorders, anxiety disorders, and trouble sleeping. It is a short acting psychoactive drug that comes in pill form. Xanax is also known as Alprazolam.

Xanax is a fast acting medication that typically takes effect within 10 to 30 minutes after taking the medication, with 95% of results within one hour. The chemical Alprazolam binds to specific sites on the gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA) receptor to treat anxiety, panic disorder, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), and anxiety caused by depression. It relaxes the muscles and is a sedative that also works as an anti-seizure treatment.

The medication works by oppressing inhibitory receptors in the brain and lessening any nonstandard stimulation. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, Xanax can be addictive if used for a prolonged period and taken in high doses. Even those who take Xanax exactly as it is prescribed can become addicted to it.

Is Xanax addictive?

As mentioned above, Xanax does have addictive properties, and is a controversial drug because it is possible for individuals who have been prescribed the drug to build up a tolerance and need to take more in order to receive the benefits. Withdrawal symptoms may occur after a few weeks of steady dosing, which may lead to misuse of the drug.

Today, Xanax is the most prescribed drug and the most abused benzodiazepine in the United States retail marketplace. Anyone using Xanax regularly can become addicted to it. It is sold and traded illegally on the street, and people have been known to purchase it illegally over the internet.

Signs and Symptoms of Xanax Abuse

A person using Xanax for an extended period of time will display signs and symptoms that are apparent in their daily life. Many individuals who battle a Xanax addiction also clash with loved ones in relationships as well as in their work life. If they have stopped taking the drug and are experiencing withdrawal symptoms, they do not feel well mentally or physically.

Individuals who suffer from a Xanax addiction may exhibit a change in their eating habits, and may lose weight. They may also struggle and have financial problems. They tend to abandon family responsibilities. All of this usually occurs due to the dependence on Xanax to manage their issues on a daily basis.

A cycle of Xanax addiction and abuse creates temptation, guilt and remorse. At the Villa House at Avalon Malibu, we work with the root causes of addiction to uncover patterns that no longer serve the individual. Our residential inpatient treatment program provides a stable and temptation-free environment for recovery where there is around-the-clock care. Our professional medical staff understands the withdrawal symptoms associated with a Xanax addiction, and may administer medication to assist in helping symptoms subside.

Signs You May Need Help with Xanax

You might consider professional treatment if you:

  • Rely on Xanax to get through daily life or stressful moments.
  • Feel unable to reduce your dose or stop despite wanting to.
  • Experience craving, anxiety, or restlessness between doses.
  • Use more than prescribed, or use in nonmedical ways (popping extra pills, buying off-script).
  • Suffer from rebound anxiety or insomnia when you cut back.
  • Experience tremors, heart palpitations, or other physical distress when trying to stop.
  • Have already attempted tapering or quitting on your own and found it difficult or unsafe.
  • Use Xanax to self-medicate unaddressed emotional or trauma-related pain.
