Our Program Spotlight this month is Acupuncture Therapy! When recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, it is important to treat your entire body not just your addiction. One way that we do this here at Avalon Malibu is by using a holistic approach that includes acupuncture. Acupuncture therapy is a large part of our holistic approach to treatment as it helps to relieve symptoms of withdrawal and subsequently help prevent relapse.
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a Chinese medical treatment used to relieve pain and illness. It is believed that energy, known as Qi, flows throughout your body through meridians and channels. Occasionally, this flow of energy becomes obstructed. This is when acupuncture is beneficial.
During treatment, one of our contracted and licensed Board Certified Physicians, specializing in acupuncture will insert miniscule needles into your skin. These needles will clear the channels allowing your Qi to once again flow freely. The key is to stimulate nerves and muscles and help increase blood flow.
How Acupuncture Therapy Helps With Recovery
Recent studies have shown that acupuncture can help to relieve pain and give patients a sense of well-being.
Two benefits come from the use of acupuncture in addiction treatment:
- Helping to relieve withdrawal symptoms
- Preventing relapse
By using acupuncture therapy during the early stages of detox, we can help to alleviate some of the more painful symptoms. This helps our patients to continue with the treatment program and achieve full recovery from their addictions.
It is believed that your muscles keep a memory of past traumas. This may cause you to feel pain and tension long after you have recovered from addiction. This pain may trigger a relapse in many patients. Acupuncture helps to clear the memory of your muscles by realigning your Qi and opening the channels for it to flow freely.
Integrating Acupuncture Into Your Treatment
Our alternative treatment programs are specifically designed for each individual patient’s needs. Our licensed and caring staff will evaluate the needs of each patient and design a treatment plan to be included in your addiction recovery program. Depending on your needs, you may receive treatments weekly or bi-weekly.
While you may feel some relief after one acupuncture treatment, it is a process that involves multiple treatments to achieve the full benefits. It is recommended that patients continue routine acupuncture therapy after you have completed your treatment program to help maintain long-term sobriety.
