Understanding and Managing Your Triggers

Understanding and Managing Your Triggers

If you’re new to recovery, then you might be wondering about understanding and managing your triggers. In this blog, we’re going to go over this topic and discuss some of the things you need to know. This blog is certainly not comprehensive, so feel free to reach out to our Avalon Malibu team if you’d like more information or want to get advice that’s specific to your situation.

Identifying Your Triggers

Do you know what a trigger is? For the purposes of this blog, we’ll define a trigger as something that makes you reconsider addiction recovery or something that encourages you to use a substance.

Triggers can look different for everyone. Some people find a certain place triggering, while others may find a person or a specific relationship to be triggering. Regardless of what your triggers are, it’s essential to think about identifying them. Once you identify your triggers, you can work through them or find ways to intentionally avoid them.

Managing Triggers

If you’ve already done the hard work to identify your triggers, then it’s time to manage them. But what does this mean? By managing your triggers, you can set yourself up for success and avoid situations that might be tempting.

Especially if you’re new to recovery, it’s essential to be able to manage your triggers. If you know that there’s something someone does that triggers you, then you can either set a boundary with that person or you may choose to not have them in your life temporarily.

It’s typically recommended that you avoid triggers when you’re new to recovery. With that being said, triggers are a reality that many people have to face, and managing them can be an important part of staying on the right track. If you’re not sure how to manage your triggers, feel free to reach out to a member of our Avalon Malibu staff. They’ll be able to point you in the right direction.
