Celebrities tend to pave the way in our society – they guide the latest trends, speak up on the latest issues and emphasize certain behavioral patterns that become integrated into our culture. Celebrities are incredibly influential – and while we don’t always know the intimate details of their lives, the work they produce can have such an incredibly important influence on us. Mental health has been more widely discussed amongst celebrities, as more and more are coming out about their own personal struggles with mental health issues and how they manage the symptoms they experience. Demi Lovato, for example, has been very open about not only her struggle with bipolar disorder (BPD), but also with her journey through addiction recovery, relapse, sobriety and more.

Unfortunately, we’ve lost many amazing celebrities this past year due to mental health concerns and/or drug-related overdoses. We’d like to commemorate some of the precious souls that we lost in 2018:

  •    Jackson Odell, 20 – the young actor who starred in “The Goldbergs” and who was also on “Modern Family” and “The Fosters” died by an accidental drug overdose in June of 2018
  •    Mac Miller, 26 – a rapper and producer who worked with amazing artists like SZA and Vince Staples died in September of 2018 by an apparent drug overdose
  •    Avicii, 28 – a dj and producer, Avicii, known for his song “Wake Me Up”, died by suicide in April of 2018
  •    Verne Troyer, 49 – a stunt double, actor and famously known for playing Mini Me in “Austin Powers” , Verne died by suicide in April of 2018

While these are only a few celebrities that we’ve lost in 2018, they’ve made incredible contributions to our society and our hearts way heavy from their loss. Mental health and addiction are incredibly difficult aspects of life to face, but the sooner we seek help – and the more supportive we become of others going through these issues – the more lives we can save.
